A SAMHSA sponsored two-part series webinar presented on behalf of the University of Maryland’s Institute for Innovation took place Monday, August 1, 2022 from 2:30-4:00pm Eastern Time (Part One) and Tuesday, August 9, 2022 from 4:00-5:00pm Eastern Time (Part Two) titled “Consultation: The Key to Any Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health System”.
Description: Infant/Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC) is a relationship-based, collaborative support designed to improve the capacity of early childhood professionals to promote children’s mental health as a primary effort to address significant mental illness in young children and families. This prevention-focused specialty-workforce is the key to intervening early for at risk children and families. Additionally, IECMHC often serves to address racial biases as well as early patterns of suspension and expulsion that reflect systemic racism and are the precursors to the preschool to prison pipeline. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the IECMHC model of promoting social emotional well-being, preventing behavioral health concerns, and address early manifestations of mental health challenges. Participants will also hear about long-term efforts to build internal capacity of the consultation workforce to address components of white-supremacy and racism that show up within early childhood spaces, a well as the considerations for building and supporting a multidisciplinary workforce that understands components of family systems, development and early education as well as mental health and behavioral interventions for the 0-5 population. Discussion will also focus on replication and finance opportunities within webinar attendee’s states, territories and communities.
Learning Objectives:
•Participants will gain an understanding of how IECMH Consultation Services act as a protective factor to address SED in very young children and combat related biases in the early childhood workforce as they interact with children and families that present with challenging behaviors
•Participants will gain knowledge of the specialty skills needed for this service to apply considerations of development, SED manifestations in very young children and related community referrals and settings.
•Participants will gain access to information on how IECMH Consultation can be initiated and supported within states and systems.
